Waldorf Homeschool Activities: Waldorf Balance Beam for Early Grades IV

Updated: May 1, 2023

Looking for Waldorf homeschool activities that are fun for your early grades child? We started our balance beam work, in the first video of this series, by walking forward and backward. As the old saying goes, we really know something when we can do it forward and backward. So, now we can combine our forward and backward walking with spelling. Naturally we begin with simple words. In this video, we use the word "CAT", which is a cvc word (consonant-vowel-consonant). Walking forward, we spell it forward; walking backward, we spell the word backward. This is a very economical use of activities. They are still working on their balance, which is always a good thing to do. At the same time, when they are spelling, their attention is not completely focused on the balance, which allows the body to handle that activity more. Ultimately, the ability to balance should become less and less conscious as their skill and abilities improve.
